Hopefully we'll have our own Quest for Infamy review sometime in the future, on the condition that esteemed community member Aeschylus finds the time to write down his impressions." Your efforts ensured that the Cursed Vaults will never again threaten Hogwarts, and for that, I thank you. The reviewer concludes by calling Quest for Infamy "a disappointing misfire". ![]() Luckily, you can turn off the voices if you want and not have to deal with them. Since Quest for Infamy is a budget title, I'm sort of guessing the voice actors weren't professionals, or maybe this was an attempt at humor that just didn't work for me. If it hadn't been for the subtitles, I wouldn't have known what he was saying about half of the time. For some reason almost all of the secondary characters use bizarre accents, and even the main character mumbles his lines. ![]() I laughed a lot when I played the Quest for Glory games, but not so much with Quest for Infamy.įinally, the voice acting in Quest for Infamy is sort of odd and annoying. Adventures can often create a lot of humor from when players get stuck and start trying out random inventory objects in random places, but in Quest for Infamy you almost always get a generic "you can't do that" response - or the game calls you an idiot, which is one of its favorite pastimes. Infamous Quests was also a little lazy in their writing. And you don't even want to know about the "bush" jokes. In the first hour I played, I saw references to masturbation, drug use, hookers, sex with dogs, and STDs there's a beheading complete with splurting blood your character is allowed to urinate on all sorts of things and "shit" was used almost every other word for some characters. I guess because you're playing an anti-hero, Infamous Quests didn't want to have "nice" jokes and instead made a beeline straight for the gutter. Worse, the tone of the game is dramatically different. The second problem is the writing quality, which doesn't even come close to the level found in the Quest for Glory games. What if I have already played those old games? I must admit I'll never understand the "can't recommend over old games" argument - it just eludes me completely. In this case, you can buy all five of the Quest for Glory games for about half the price of Quest for Infamy, and no doubt enjoy them more. Plus, the more a new game looks and plays like an old game, the less reason there is for me to recommend it over the old game. I can still enjoy a game even if it has old VGA-style graphics, but I'd just as soon avoid not having tooltips and scrollbars and quicksaves and context-sensitive cursors and other modern amenities. That doesn't necessarily sound bad, but developer Infamous Quests even copied the interface, and while people often get nostalgic for old games, it's not because of the interfaces. The first is that it's almost a carbon copy of Quest for Glory I, except with an anti-hero instead of a hero. Sadly, though, Quest for Infamy has three major problems that prevented me from enjoying it very much. This completely deflates the RPG aspect of the game, leaving Quest for Infamy as mostly an adventure. As you use your combat skills, you increase their ratings, but once you reach 100 with block, it's guaranteed to be successful, which means you can use it to heal yourself whenever you want - and thus defeat any enemy in the game, even the end boss, regardless of your other skills or equipment. The main culprit here is the block skill. ![]() Like a lot of RPGs, the combat in Quest for Infamy starts out difficult and then gets easy. ![]() Soon the Space-born were able to establish themselves on Atys and begin rebuilding their civilization. Rudimental tools were hardened and improved. The space-born "discovered" ways to use the flora and fauna for shelter, food and tools. The planet treated the foreign matter like an infection. The technology that the survivors had depended on for generations soon perished. Great vines meters thick travel for kilometers, high above the surface. But as with all beauty, the planet is deceptive. Seasons are swift and the fauna and flora plentiful. The crews stripped what they could from their ships and allowed the gravity of Atys to bring them in.Ītys is beautiful, a welcome change to the coldness of steel and the emptiness of space. Atys was within range and could sustain life. Their ships battered and their fuel cells nearly depleted. A group of Space-born found themselves in a desperate situation as their convey emerged from a solar storm. The stories of the glory of Earth gave comfort to the old and the stories of the evil V'rix, the foolishness of Amah, the sacrifice of Grey Feather and even the greed of Isabella were used to frighten the children into good behavior. Always looking over their shoulders, waiting. They flew among the stars and the heavens as nomads, seeking resources and alliances. ![]() The legend goes that our ancestors were space-born. It was only a matter of time before the V'rix would overrun their home worlds as well. The Terrans and Jenquai evacuated whomever they could from the outposts and the outer regions. The capital planet of the mighty Progens fell within hours. ![]() Fourth, even without being a spellcasting class, a rogue can be a mechanically difficult class to play. Third, rogues are a ¾ BAB class making it hard to land those sneak attacks. Second, sneak attack can be countered so many ways (concealment, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, positioning to avoid flank, creatures immune to precision based damage). ![]() Nitpicking a bit, you have to work hard to make a rogue reasonably potent in combat.Admittedly, Route 1 requires some Fogcutter Lenses (which your GM may or may not allow you to buy) and which cost 8K. Routes 1 and 4 can be pulled off without multiclassing with the help of Rogue Talents (Combat Trick & Weapon Training) and maybe being a human. Routes 2 and 3 are so feat intensive that they will likely involve multiclassing, which most notably lowers your skill points and sneak attack damage progression. Therefore, at least to me, the best versions of a combat rogue are the: 1) Unseen Archer 2) Switch Hitting Bow/ Dex-Based Melee Fighter 3) Throwing / Melee Fighter and 4) Two-Weapon Fighter. The problem is that after that first round (short of making yourself unseen or doing something even more novel) you can only get sneak attack on a full attack by flanking and you can only flank with a melee weapon. The best way to maximize sneak attack damage in the first round of combat is to target an enemy whose dexterity is denied (most likely flat-footed) and without concealment to unload a volley of arrows upon. In Combat Play: The main reason why you would play a rogue from a combat perspective is for sneak attack damage. ![]() Maybe even 12+Int because, after all, skills really don’t dominate most Pathfinder games anyway. If constructed properly, the designers should have given a rogue 10+Int skill points per level. Accordingly, your skill selection is not as “free-willed” as one would otherwise think. Finally, Disable Device is socially required because everyone expects for you to take on the task. Use Magic Device is required to remain relevant throughout 13 th level in a game so dominated by magic. Escape Artist is required because your CMD will be low to modest. Acrobatics is required for flanking reliably. Nitpicking a bit more, some skills are required for the class to even function. With that said, these other classes do not get 8+Int skill points per level. Further, these other skill monkey classes are spellcasting classes (bard, investigator, ranger), making Use Magic Device less necessary. Some other classes like the bard, who can effectively use Charisma for many of his skills (Versatile Performance) and who can add half his level to all knowledge checks (Bardic Knowledge), have abilities to lessen this MAD proposition. This makes the skill monkey rogue a somewhat MAD (multi-attribute dependent) proposition. Nitpicking a bit, these skills are powered by a wide range of stats (Dexterity, Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma). If you were really trying you could achieve even greater heights as a skill monkey. It would not be hard for you to maximize all of these skills. With these powerful class skills a rogue could be an Acrobatic Flank Buddy, Lookout & Scout, Party Face, In the Know Guy, Backup Healer/Mage, and Trapfinder / Trap Disarmer. The top class skills available to a rogue are as follows: Acrobatics, Escape Artist, Perception, Diplomacy, Stealth, Knowledge Local, Use Magic Device, Sense Motive and Disable Device. If you are playing an adventure where skill-oriented play is important, a rogue is a good way to go. Out-of-Combat Play: One reason why you would play a rogue is to have access to a large amount of skill points. ![]() The eggs and cheese are added to the hot pasta and tossed together until a silky sauce forms”.īut as times change and tastes develop, budding would be chefs have added cream, white wine, and even swapped out the classic pasta shapes of spaghetti and rigatoni for something else.
